Welcome to the Interactive Earthquake Map

An Educational Tool for Seismic Analysis

This application visualizes the earthquake swarm that occurred in Johor from August to October 2025. Use the timeline, map layers, and interactive markers to explore the data and learn about how scientists analyze seismic patterns to forecast risk.

Johor Earthquake Swarm

August 24 - October 05, 2025

For one week in August 2025, the ground in Johor trembled. This interactive analysis lets you step through the Segamat earthquake swarm, event by event. Explore the data, animate the seismic waves, and uncover the patterns that help scientists forecast, but not predict, these powerful natural events.

Map Overlays Explained
Risk Zones:

These zones are generated based on the density and magnitude of the earthquake epicenters. The inner, darker zone indicates a higher statistical probability of seismic stress, while the outer zone represents a broader area of influence.

Hypothetical Fault Line:

This dashed line represents a linear regression (a 'best-fit' line) calculated from the coordinates of all earthquake epicenters. It suggests the most probable orientation of the underlying fault system responsible for this seismic swarm.

Magnitude Explained

M 2.0-2.9: Minor. Rarely felt by people, but can be recorded by seismographs.

M 3.0-3.9: Light. Often felt, but rarely causes damage. Vibration is like a passing truck.

M 4.0-4.9: Moderate. Light shaking, rattling windows. Unlikely to cause significant damage.

Safety & Preparedness

During an earthquake, remember to:

DROP to your hands and knees. This position prevents you from being knocked down.
COVER your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk.
HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with it.
